As of March 2023, there are still only a few Black women billionaires in the world. However, changes in their net worth and new additions to the list are always possible. In this blog post, we’re taking a closer look at some of the top Black women billionaires as of my current knowledge, celebrating their achievements, and reflecting on their inspiring stories.

These women have made significant strides in various industries, from entertainment and cosmetics to energy and technology. Their success stories serve as inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders, demonstrating the possibilities that can be achieved through hard work, perseverance, and innovation.

  1. Isabel dos Santos: Isabel dos Santos, the Angolan businesswoman, continues to be one of the wealthiest Black women in the world, with an estimated net worth of $2.1 billion as of March 2023. She made her fortune through investments in telecommunications, media, and banking.
  2. Oprah Winfrey: Oprah Winfrey, the media mogul, talk show host, and philanthropist, is still one of the richest Black women in the world, with an estimated net worth of $2.5 billion as of March 2023.
  3. Folorunsho Alakija: Folorunsho Alakija, the Nigerian businesswoman, is also still one of the top Black women billionaires, with an estimated net worth of $1 billion as of March 2023. She made her fortune in the oil industry and also has interests in fashion and real estate.
  4. Rihanna: As mentioned before, Rihanna (Robyn Rihanna Fenty) became a billionaire in 2021, largely due to the success of her cosmetics brand Fenty Beauty. As of March 2023, her estimated net worth is still around $1.7 billion.
  5. Sheila Johnson: Sheila Johnson, the American entrepreneur and philanthropist, is still one of the wealthiest Black women in the world, with an estimated net worth of $820 million as of March 2023. She co-founded BET (Black Entertainment Television) and has also invested in the hospitality industry.

In addition to the current Black women billionaires, we also want to recognize those who are close to joining the prestigious club. Janice Bryant Howroyd, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Pat McGrath, and Jessica O. Matthews are some of the most prominent examples.

Top Black Women Millionaires

Janice Bryant Howroyd: Janice Bryant Howroyd is an American entrepreneur and the founder of the ActOne Group, an employment agency and staffing services firm. Her net worth is estimated to be around $420 million as of March 2023. Although not a billionaire yet, her wealth has grown significantly over the years and she remains one of the wealthiest Black women in the United States.

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter: Beyoncé, an American singer, actress, and entrepreneur, is also one of the wealthiest Black women, with an estimated net worth of $500 million as of March 2023. She has made her fortune through a successful music career, business ventures, including Ivy Park and Parkwood Entertainment, and investments in companies such as Tidal. Though not a billionaire yet, her wealth continues to grow and she remains an influential figure in the entertainment industry.

Pat McGrath: Pat McGrath, a British makeup artist and the founder of Pat McGrath Labs, has an estimated net worth of $700 million as of March 2023. Her cosmetics company has been valued at over $1 billion, and she has been referred to as the “most influential makeup artist in the world.” McGrath’s wealth has grown considerably since the launch of her cosmetics line in 2015, and she continues to be a prominent figure in the beauty industry.

Jessica O. Matthews: Jessica O. Matthews is an American entrepreneur and inventor with an estimated net worth of $350 million as of March 2023. She is the founder and CEO of Uncharted Power, an energy technology company. Although not a billionaire yet, Matthews has become an influential figure in the renewable energy sector and her wealth continues to grow as her company expands.

While there may be other Black women whose wealth has grown or who have joined the ranks of billionaires since my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, these are some of the most prominent examples. It is essential to recognize the achievements and contributions of these women, as they continue to break barriers and pave the way for future generations of Black women entrepreneurs and leaders.
