Dear Black People, the Best Places to Get Your Taxes Done
Welcome to tax season again! For some of us, tax season fills us with dread. It can be scary if you’ve never filed your taxes before, if you’re filing on your own for the first time, or even if you’ve done it for years. How do you do it? Where do you go? What if you don’t have money to file?
Don’t worry, we know all about the anxiety that goes hand-in-hand with tax season. Let’s take a look at some of the places you can file, when you can file, and when your taxes are due.
When are Taxes Due?
The last day to file taxes for 2021 is Monday, April 18th, 2022. In fact, April 18th, 2022 is a very important day for tax season. If you need an extension on your taxes, you’ll need to file your extension by this day as well. It is also the 1st-Quarter due date for estimated self-employment tax payments, and the last date you can make a 2021 contribution to your IRA account. In short, circle this day on your calendar with a giant red pen. TurboTax has an excellent full list of due dates on their website if you’d like to take a look.
When Can I File My Taxes?
The first day the IRS will accept your 2021 taxes is January 24th, 2022. Even if you’re ready to file now, you won’t be able to file until that day. Yahoo! Finance has an article explaining why, and it has to do with the time it takes to prepare the massive influx of returns. They need to make sure every taxpayer that is eligible will receive the proper amount for the 2021 Child Tax Credit.
Where Can I File My Taxes?
Whether you’re preparing your taxes on your own or need someone to do it for you, we have some resources to get you started. If your taxes are long and involved, it might be best to have them prepared. The best resources for in-person tax preparation are H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, and Liberty Tax Service.
If your taxes are simple, you can file them electronically on your own. Do-it-yourself tax software can help you, such as TurboTax and H&R Block and are cheaper than having your taxes prepared. However, did you know there are free options available as well? We highly recommend you take advantage of these free opportunities. Here are some free resources we’ve linked below:
